I don't know how you feel about RTS (real time strategy with and RPG-style twist), but The Lord Of The Rings:The War Of The Ring is a good game.  It's solid, yet the graphics are basic and a little dated.  It's VERY true to the books, however, and it follows the entire story line (even the hobbit, although it's just a prelude to the real trilogy).  Instead of choosing between different races like in Starcraft (another good RTS, by the way), you simply choose between good and evil, each with their own expansive storyline and plenty of branching paths, for high replay value.  Hope that "Helps poor stranger".
